On Saturday Sep. 27, thousands of former addicts and their supporters from across the country will band together to form a human chain for recovery across the Brooklyn Bridge, before marching to a demonstration at Lower Manhattan's City Hall Park. Called "The Recovery Rally," the event will feature notable non-profit and political figures, celebs and a special performance by singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, himself a former meth user.
The rally, which aims to bring alcohol and drug addiction (which currently affects more than 22 million Americans) out of the closet, will be emceed by Mark Lundholm, a renowned comedian and motivational speaker who shares his own story of overcoming addiction.
Organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the event launches The Recovery Project, which includes a series of celebrity-driven psa's stressing treatment and recovery, on A&E.
The cable channel, already home to the Emmy-nominated program "Intervention," which scares viewers straight-edge, will also join with federal agencies and non-profits to create local events to spread the message that addiction is a treatable disease and recovery is possible.
