Hey Daniel, where have you been?

Danielsuit(Getty Images) While his sister Natasha continued riding the stratosphere of global pop success, Daniel Bedingfield dropped off the radar and hasn't been heard from in years. But earlier this summer, an unexpected dance remix/rework of his 2002 pop hit "If You're Not the One" had me asking -- what the hell happened to Daniel Bedingfield?

Daniel hit the ground running in 2001 with "Gotta Get Thru This". You've heard the track -- it's the one you thought was sung by a girl until you randomly saw the video one night at a bar. It sounded so different from anything that was out during that time. Simple crackin' beats, a few organ stabs and splendid vocals, which were all produced in the comfort of his bedroom. That full album would churn out at least four more hits for Daniel, which proved him to be a great songwriter and performer. With an exceptional falsetto range and boy-next-door good looks, it seemed like he was on his way to becoming Europe's Justin Timberlake.

He released the "Second First Impression" album, but not before he was involved in a horrific car crash in New Zealand that put him in a head brace for half the year. Insult added to injury as the sophomore album was considered a flop by record execs and critics, and the release was barely noticed stateside. Around the same time, Natasha Bedingfield arrived on the scene all smiles, looking like a modern-day Debbie Gibson with solid pop tunes like "These Words" and "Unwritten", and she's still going strong with last year's "Pocketful of Sunshine". Unfortunately that sunshine has stolen quite a bit of Daniel's thunder.

But maybe the clouds are clearing for Daniel, as rumors persist that he has at least one album ready for release in 2009 and two others in the queue. Last spring he appeared back on the grid with a rework/remix titled "The One" by Sharam of Deep Dish. Could this be a sign that he's on the verge of a comeback? If so, now would be the perfect time. Daniel, I hope you're out there somewhere thinking the same thing.

Here's the video of Sharam's "The One" with D. Bedingfield missing in action:
